The networked refugee: The role of transnational networks in the journeys across the Mediterranean

The experience of migrants crossing the Mediterranean has been represented as that passive components large-scale human flows driven by conflicts, migration policies and smuggling. This article proposes a reflection on advantages using social network lens to better understand these experiences at micro- meso-level, bringing fore personal relational dimensions. By examining narratives people who reached coasts Sicily (Italy) via Libyan route, highlights key role local transnational ties every single juncture very long, often serendipitous journeys. concept ‘journey’ is used frame this analysis, but also debunk some deterministic, static Euro-centred assumptions, which have characterized mainstream scholarly debates.
